Introduction.

Nestled in a little valley of the Precambrian Shield, the Village of Westport sits quietly along the Rideau Canal at the west end of Big Rideau Lake.

Only a 40 minute drive from Hwy #401 at Kingston, and just 75 minutes from Ottawa/Hull (see driving times here), Westport has been a self-governing village since incorporation in 1904 with a population of about 700. (view some of Westport's history here)

The view of Westport from Spy Rock, atop Foley Mountain, is truly a spectactular view. And while you are there, explore the rest of Foley Mounyain Conservation Area (800 acres) with its scenic lookouts, nature trails, beaver ponds and picnic areas.

Originally called Manhards Mills, Westport today is accessible by road, small aircraft, and is a definite "port-of-call" on the Rideau Canal System. Just outside Westport, on Cty Rd. #10, is the aerodrome; owned bt the Township of Rideau Lakes and managed by the Rideau Lakes Flying Club. It is a CRL2 facility.

The downtown core has been preserved as it was in the 19th century, making Westport a beautiful heritage destination for thousands of visitors and cottagers every year.

Fishing is good due to the Government of Ontario fish-recovery ponds. Fish include: yellow perch, smallmouth bass, pickerel, and northern pike.
